Rather than just tell people about it afterwards, here's something we've got on our calendar as a must-see event. On July 15th/16th the second East Anglian Medieval Fayre takes place at Rougham Airfield, just a couple of miles East of Bury St Edmunds (just off Mount Rd on the way to Thurston, or off the new A14 Rougham junction). We went last year and it was a fantastic day out.
There were loads of tents with stalls or craft demonstrations. These ones were used by the competitors in the Full Contact Sword Fighting tourney.
It was rather hot to be wearing full armour...
...but they needed it for the fighting.
The Destrier display team gave a display of mounted hunting games. The ladies beat the men!
Big Miss had a go at archery, we got excellent grub from the food tent (and beer from the beer tent!), watched the duelling, jousting and falconry.
The highlight for me, though, was the amazing band, Schelmish, who are coming again this year. The introduced themselves as "a bunch of beer-swilling Germans" and they are sort of like Heavy Metal meets Early Music Consort. It was worth going just to see and hear them - the drumming reminds me of Animal in the muppets and the bagpipes are loud! You could say they are to the Mediaeval Baebes what a cannon is to a .22 hand pistol.
Talking of firearms, the day finished with a staged battle including cannons...
...but we didn't manage to stay that long, although we could hear it from our back garden, a good mile and half away. We hope to see it this year, though - I can hardly wait.

Thanks for that John - we are putting that on our calendar. I know a 6 yr old boy who is mad about knights and swordfights etc and this event looks right up his street!
It's a great bribe for our 4 year-old to amke him behave. He is mad about knights too.
