Wells-Next-the-Sea and Holkham Beach

The forecast yesterday said it was going to be hot, so we thought we would go to the seaside to find somewhere a bit cooler. It is a bit of a trek from Bury St Edmunds but the North Norfolk coast has some great places to go, and it makes a bit of change from Dunwich Heath and Southwold, where we go more regularly (and I'd a sneaky suspicion they might be a bit crowded).

So we went to Wells-Next-the-Sea and the beautiful Holkham beach. It took us about 1 1/2 hours because some people wouldn't get up early to beat the traffic, but there are some lovely villages and scenery along the way, so no matter.

Not surprisingly, there were lots of other people there, so we parked at the football ground as we could see people coming back from a full beach car park. We decided to have our picnic on the path down to the beach, where we had a nice view of the town.

We also had a great view of the finish of the yacht race...

..as we were right next to the stakeboat at the finish line. These three were neck and neck right up to the line.

Wells-Next-the-Sea is a bit of a misnomer these days - the sea is a good mile from the town now after centuries of retreating. You can get a little train, but we walked.

There were loads of people in the water and on the water too. I think I would quite enjoy a ride on the giant banana...

Despite the hordes, there was enough beach for the entire population of East Anglia...

What an excellent day out. "Oh I do like to be beside the seaside...".
